Beer Wages and Champagne Taste

After a terrible experience with a potential apartment on Delisle, I was terribly worried we’d never find an adequate apartment. My main concern was location: It had to be near the subway, preferably the Yonge line, and close enough to a park big enough for Charlie to be off leash. We also hopped for lots of light, maybe even south-facing; a balcony; a safe neighbourhood; and parking. A large kitchen with dishwasher and renovated bathroom and kitchen with new stainless steel appliances would be a bonus.

Well, after a tip from one of my sister-in-law‘s friends, we found Brentwood Towers at Yonge & Davisville, which fit the bill nearly on every point. After getting the official word on our approval just this morning, I’m now daydreaming about furniture placement, kitchen and bathroom accessories, window coverings, and wall art. And building a hefty shopping list in the process!

I’m loving the pegboard DIY potential which might fit perfectly in the space just outside of the galley kitchen. Since it’s quite a small kitchen space, there may be some storage overflow into the “dining” space. The dining space I’m going to use instead as an office, similar to what I’ve seen at the apartment of my friends Phil and Luke. I’ve also seen this done with a space belonging to a high school friend’s younger brother (picture below), who used a circular table to bridge the office space to the living space. Since my table is square (and huge) I’m hoping this method will still work somehow in our apartment.

I’m looking for space saving ideas, such as this metal bathroom shelf positioned above the doorway. It’s such great use of an unused space and I hope our bathroom is conducive to this type of trick since I know it’s not a huge space.

And now it’s time to dream! I’d loooooove to have the living room pictured below with one weathered, brown leather couch opposite a non-IKEA-looking futon (expanded) which sits in the middle of the room for an open feel but could be folded up for a more intimate conversation area. I think I’m dreaming because I doubt our living room is long enough to fit a couch, a futon, and my dining table. And I doubt we have it in the budget for a couch AND a futon. A girl can dream.
